One thing to know going in: JPG drops a little detail to keep files small, and it can't hold a transparent background, so any see-through areas render as white. If that matters, PNG is the better target.

What converting a PDF to JPG actually does

Every page of your PDF gets rendered into a single flat JPG. That word, rendered, is the one that matters. The tool doesn't dig through the file for photos that happen to be embedded in it. It draws the whole page from scratch, the same way a PDF reader paints it on screen, and saves that painting as an image. Text, tables, vector shapes, background fills, embedded pictures, stamps, annotations, all of it gets baked together into one picture. Whatever the page looks like when you open or print it is what lands in the JPG.

Under the hood a Python renderer built on PyMuPDF opens the PDF, walks the pages you asked for, and paints each one at the resolution you set. It works out a zoom factor from your DPI choice, since a PDF's own baseline is 72 DPI, so picking 300 DPI renders the page at a bit over four times that scale. Each page is written out as its own JPG. If PyMuPDF isn't on the server, the job falls back to a poppler-based renderer that produces the same result.

Pick a resolution, and here's what you get

There are three settings, and the tool starts on 150 DPI because it suits most jobs. 72 DPI is for screens and email: a US letter page comes out around 612 by 792 pixels and the files stay tiny. 150 DPI doubles that to roughly 1275 by 1650, fine for slides and light printing. 300 DPI is print grade, so the same letter page lands at 2550 by 3300 pixels, sharp and noticeably heavier. My honest take is that 300 DPI is wasted effort when the images only ever live on a screen. It just inflates the download. Leave it on 150 unless something is going to paper.

Rendering a page is not the same as extracting its images

This one trips people up, so it's worth spelling out. If a page has a company logo and two product photos on it, this tool gives you one JPG of the entire page with the logo and photos sitting exactly where they were. It does not hand you the logo file and the two photo files on their own. Pulling out those embedded files is a different job with a different result, and there's a separate tool for it.

If it's the embedded photos and graphics you're after rather than a picture of the whole page, you can extract the images instead and get the original files on their own.

Where JPG falls short

JPG trades a little quality for much smaller files. On photos and busy colour pages you'll never notice. On pages built from thin fonts, hairlines, or tight tables, look closely at the edges and you might catch faint softening, most of all at 72 DPI. The bigger catch is transparency: JPG can't store it at all. If a page has a see-through background, the converter flattens it to white, because that's the only thing the format allows. When sharp edges or a transparent background genuinely matter, JPG is the wrong target and you'll want a lossless one instead.

For pages where crisp text or a transparent background is the point, convert the pages to PNG: it keeps every pixel and leaves see-through areas see-through.

Colors, and why they can shift a little

PDFs built for a print shop often store their colours in CMYK, the ink model presses run on. Screens and JPG both work in RGB, so the renderer converts CMYK pages to RGB on the way out. That conversion is close but not exact, and a deep blue or a bright orange can land a shade off from the printed proof. For anything staying on a screen it's a non-issue. If you're matching against a physical print, expect small differences and check the output against the source.

A real example

Say you designed a six-page event program, exported it to PDF, and now you want it on Instagram as a carousel. Instagram won't take a PDF. Upload it here, leave the resolution on 150 DPI, leave the page range empty so all six pages convert, and press convert. Seconds later you download a ZIP holding page_001.jpg through page_006.jpg, each about 1275 by 1650 pixels. Drop them into the carousel in order and you're done. No screenshots, no cropping, no going back to the design app to re-export.

What you actually download

The result is always a ZIP, even when the PDF is a single page. Inside, the images are named page_001.jpg, page_002.jpg, and up, zero-padded so they always sort in the right order, and the numbers match the original pages in your PDF. Convert only pages 3 and 7 and you'll get page_003.jpg and page_007.jpg, not renumbered from one. The download itself keeps your original filename with a jpg tag added, so a report.pdf comes back as something like report-jpg-thefreeconverter.com.zip. Unzip it and every page is a standalone image that opens on any device.

There's no fixed limit on how many pages you can convert, but each job runs against a time budget, so a very large file at 300 DPI can run out of time before it finishes. If that happens, convert it in two or three page ranges instead of all in one go.
