How PDF Cropping Works
PDF pages have defined boundaries called the CropBox that determine what portion of the page is visible and printable. Cropping adjusts this CropBox to show only the area you specify. The original content still exists in the file—it's just hidden outside the visible area. This means cropping is non-destructive in terms of actual content.
Think of cropping like placing a frame over your page—you're defining what portion shows through the frame. The page content behind doesn't change, but viewers only see what's within the cropped boundaries. This is different from actually removing content, which would require flattening and re-rendering.
For uniform documents, you can apply the same crop to all pages. For mixed-content PDFs (like scanned documents with varying margins), you might need to crop pages differently. Our tool applies your specified crop values consistently across all pages.
Step-by-Step: Cropping Your PDF
- Upload your PDF — Drag your document into the upload area.
- Set crop values — Enter the amount to trim from each edge (in points, inches, or millimeters) or use percentage-based cropping.
- Process cropping — The tool adjusts the CropBox for all pages according to your specifications.
- Download result — Your cropped PDF with trimmed margins is ready.
Crop Methods
Margin-Based Cropping
Specify exact values to remove from each edge. Enter different values for top, bottom, left, and right margins. Values in points (72 points = 1 inch) for precision.
Percentage-Based Cropping
Remove a percentage of each edge. Useful when you want proportional trimming regardless of page size. 10% from all sides removes 10% of width/height from each edge.
Common Use Cases
Print Optimization
Remove excessive margins so content fills more of the printed page. Especially useful for PDFs with unnecessarily wide margins wasting paper.
Removing Printer Marks
Trim crop marks, bleed areas, and registration marks from print-ready PDFs. Creates clean documents without production marks showing.
Cleaning Scanned Documents
Remove dark edges, shadows, or uneven borders from scanned pages. Creates uniform page sizes from inconsistent scans.
Screen Reading
Crop to content area for better display on tablets and e-readers. Maximizes content size on smaller screens by removing empty margins.
Book Margin Trimming
Trim binding margins from scanned book pages. Remove the gutter area and standardize page sizes for a cleaner reading experience.
Presentation Prep
Crop PDFs to match presentation aspect ratios. Remove excess whitespace for full-screen display without empty borders.
Understanding PDF Page Boxes
PDFs have multiple "boxes" defining different boundaries:
MediaBox
The full page size including any bleed area. This is the physical size of the page.
CropBox (What we adjust)
The visible and printable area. This is what viewers see and printers output. Our tool modifies this box.
TrimBox
The intended final page size after physical trimming in print production.
Measurement Units
- Points (default): 72 points = 1 inch. Standard PDF unit.
- Inches: 1 inch = 2.54 cm = 72 points
- Millimeters: 25.4 mm = 1 inch = 72 points
- Percentage: Relative to page dimensions. 10% of an 8.5" page = 0.85"
Technical Specifications
- Processing: CropBox modification using PyPDF2/qpdf
