How WiFi QR Codes Work
When you create a WiFi QR code, your network details get encoded in a special format that smartphones understand. When someone scans it with their phone camera, their phone recognizes it's a WiFi network and offers to connect. One tap, and they're online.
This works on both iPhone (iOS 11 and later) and Android phones. No special app needed. Just the built-in camera.
Where People Use WiFi QR Codes
Airbnb and Vacation Rentals
Guests arriving at your rental don't want to hunt for the WiFi password. Print the QR code and frame it, or include it in your welcome book. Five-star reviews come from small conveniences like this.
Cafes and Restaurants
Table tents, menu cards, or stickers near the entrance. Customers can connect without asking staff, and staff don't have to repeat the password fifty times a day.
Offices and Coworking Spaces
Guest networks become much easier to share. Print the QR code in meeting rooms or reception areas. Visitors connect themselves without IT support.
Home
Family visits, parties, or just not wanting to read out a long password. Frame it somewhere visible, or keep it in a drawer for when guests ask.
Creating Your QR Code
- Network name (SSID) - Enter exactly as it appears on your router, including capitalization
- Password - Your WiFi password, entered exactly
- Security type - WPA/WPA2 for most modern networks, WEP for older routers, None for open networks
- Hidden network - Check this only if your network name is hidden
Security Considerations
A WiFi QR code contains your password in encoded form. Anyone with access to the QR code can connect to your network. Treat a printed QR code the same way you'd treat a written password.
For businesses: Consider using a guest network instead of your main business network. This keeps your primary network secure while still offering convenient WiFi access to customers.
After Generating
Download the QR code as a PNG image. You can print it any size, include it in documents, or display it digitally. Larger sizes are easier to scan from a distance.
