Why turn a JPG into a PNG

JPG is built for small file sizes, which it achieves by compressing and discarding detail. That's fine for sharing, but it's a poor format to keep editing — every time a JPG is saved, it loses a little more. PNG is lossless: once your image is a PNG, saving and re-saving it never degrades it further. That's the trade-off for not throwing anything away. If your goal is a smaller file rather than an editable one, PNG is the wrong direction; stay with JPG or use a format made for compression. A note about transparency
