Material Volume Calculator

Whether you are pouring a concrete patio, spreading mulch in garden beds, or laying gravel for a driveway, getting the volume right saves money and avoids extra trips. Enter your measurements, select rectangular, circular, or triangular shapes, and the calculator figures out cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic metres, and how many bags of material to buy. Supports both imperial and metric units.

Why Accurate Volume Estimates Matter

Ordering too little material means a second delivery charge and a project delay. Ordering too much leaves you with extra bags of concrete or a pile of gravel you have no use for. Either way, you waste money. This calculator takes three simple measurements, applies the geometry for your project shape, and returns precise volume numbers along with bag counts and weight estimates for the material you selected.

The tool handles three common project shapes. Rectangular areas cover the majority of home projects: patios, walkways, garden beds, and driveways. Circular areas work for tree rings, fire pit bases, and round garden beds. Triangular areas handle corner sections and wedge-shaped landscaping beds.

Understanding Cubic Yards vs Cubic Feet

Material suppliers in North America typically sell bulk landscape materials by the cubic yard. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet and covers roughly 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 162 square feet at 2 inches deep. Bagged products at hardware stores are sold by the cubic foot or by weight. This calculator shows both units so you can compare prices between bulk delivery and bagged purchases.

In metric regions, materials are sold by the cubic metre. One cubic metre equals approximately 1.31 cubic yards or 35.31 cubic feet. The calculator shows cubic metres alongside the imperial measurements regardless of which unit system you choose for input.

Material Weights and Bag Sizes

Different materials have very different densities. A cubic yard of concrete weighs nearly 4,000 pounds, while a cubic yard of wood mulch weighs between 400 and 800 pounds depending on moisture content. Knowing the approximate weight helps you decide between hauling material in your own truck versus paying for delivery.

Concrete

Pre-mixed concrete bags come in 60-pound and 80-pound sizes. A standard 80-pound bag yields approximately 0.6 cubic feet of mixed concrete. For a 4-inch-thick slab that is 10 feet by 10 feet, you need about 1.23 cubic yards or roughly 56 bags of 80-pound mix. For larger projects, ready-mix delivery from a concrete plant is more economical.

Mulch

Mulch is typically applied 2 to 4 inches deep around trees, shrubs, and in flower beds. One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. Bagged mulch usually comes in 2-cubic-foot bags, so you need about 13.5 bags per cubic yard. Bulk delivery is significantly cheaper for anything over 3 cubic yards.

Gravel and Stone

Gravel for driveways and paths is usually laid 2 to 4 inches deep. Crushed stone is denser than pea gravel, so the same volume weighs more. A typical driveway project uses 4 inches of compacted gravel over a geotextile fabric base. The calculator accounts for the density difference between regular gravel, pea gravel, and river rock.

Depth Measurements

For rectangular and triangular shapes, depth is entered in inches (imperial) or centimetres (metric), while length and width are in feet or metres. This matches how most people think about these projects: the patio is 10 by 12 feet, 4 inches deep. The calculator handles the unit conversion internally.

Ordering Tips

  • Add 5 to 10 percent extra: Ground is rarely perfectly level. Settling, spillage, and compaction all reduce the effective volume. Order a little more than the calculator shows.
  • Compare bulk vs bagged: Bagged material is convenient for small projects but costs significantly more per cubic yard than bulk delivery.
  • Check delivery minimums: Most landscape supply companies have a minimum order for delivery, typically 1 to 3 cubic yards.
  • Compact gravel in lifts: For driveways and load-bearing surfaces, add gravel in 2-inch lifts and compact each layer before adding the next.
  • Measure twice: Walk the area with a tape measure and check your dimensions against a second measurement. A one-foot error on a 20-foot measurement changes volume by 5 percent.
